India has been mighty unlucky with its recent string of toss results in One Day Internationals (ODIs). This streak continued on Sunday in Dubai when the men in blue registered their 13th consecutive loss. For skipper Rohit Sharma it was a personal milestone as he has now matched an unwanted record. Of these 13 consecutive losses, 10 have occurred with Rohit Sharma as captain.
India's losing streak began way in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, when Australia defeated India to lift the title. Thereafter, India lost all the tosses in the three-match ODI series against South Africa. KL Rahul captained the team in the 50-over matches. Rohit failed to win a toss in all three ODIs against Sri Lanka in 2024. India also lost all the tosses in the England series.
This barren run has placed Rohit Sharma alongside former West Indies captain Brian Lara and Netherlands captain Peter Borren in the record books for most consecutive tosses lost by a captain in ODIs. Here is what the current leaderboard looks like:
Most consecutive tosses lost by a captain in ODIs
12 Brian Lara (Oct 1998 - May 1999)
11 Peter Borren (Mar 2011 - Aug 2013)
10 Rohit Sharma (Nov 2023 - Mar 2025) *
