India are coming off a major setback as they lost to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a margin of 1-3, thus losing their chance to qualify for the WTC 2025 final. Several players, including the captain Rohit Sharma, did not perform up to expectations in the series, and they were heavily criticized. There were even calls for them to play domestic cricket. Even the BCCi has reportedly asked players to play domestic cricket to be considered for selection in the future. Rohit himself is turning up to practice with the Mumbai side before the Ranji Trophy resumes on January 23. Another star batter is now set to play the tournament.
According to a report by the Hindustan Times, Shubman Gill is set to play for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy group stage match against Karnataka from January 23. Gill has not been selected in the T20I series vs England and hence has time to play the premier red-ball tournament.
“Yes, Shubman Gill is available for Punjab’s Ranji match against Karnataka on January 23,” a source close to the Punjab Cricket Association told the publication
Shubman Gill has played only two domestic games in the past four years. He last played the Ranji Trophy for Punjab in 2022 in a quarter-final clash against Madhya Pradesh. His last red-ball domestic appearance came in the Duleep Trophy 2024," he said.
Shubman Gill had a forgettable outing in the Border-Gavaslar Trophy 2024, where he scored just 91 runs in three matches. He was even dropped in the 4th Test in Melbourne.

BCCI Urges Players To Take Part In Domestic Cricket

According to a report by The Hindu, the BCCI have communicated to all cricketers to play the Ranji Trophy, even though it is not mandatory. However, if they don't play the tournament, the selectors can take suitable action.
“It’s not been made mandatory but it has been communicated to all the cricketers, even the fringe players, to play Ranji Trophy. If they don’t, it will be up to the selectors to take suitable action,”
