Suryakumar Yadav will return to lead India during the five-match T20I series against England. The BCCI announced the India squad recently and snubbed senior players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant. The players were part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and would be in India's scheme of things for the ODI series and the following ICC Champions Trophy. The highlight of the squad was the return of Mohammed Shami who made a comeback after a long layoff due to injury.
Surya has been a prolific performer for India and will be one of the key players for the hosts in the T20I series. SKY could also create a massive record if he can continue his six-hitting spree in the T20I series. Suryakumar Yadav has scored 145 sixes in 78 matches and if he can score five more sixes in the T20I series against England, he will become the first player in the world to hit 150 sixes in less than 100 innings among full ICC members. UAE's Muhammad Waseem has also hit 150 sixes in less than 100 matches. Among Test-playing nations, the record is currently held by Martin Guptill, who reached the milestone in 105 matches. Former India captain Rohit Sharma scored 150 sixes in 119 matches.
The T20I series gets underway on January 22, with the final scheduled for February 2. The teams will clash in a three-match ODI series after the T20Is. While all focus at the moment is on the Champions Trophy, the series by no means is irrelevant as it will serve as a platform to prepare the core for T20 World Cup 2026.
