Gautam Gambhir's future in the Indian cricket team is under massive threat less than a year after he took charge of the team after replacing Rahul Dravid in the top job. Since the 2011 World Cup winner took over as the head coach of the national team, the Rohit Sharma-led side has faced embarrassing defeats to Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Gambhir's job is under threat with a review set to take place at the 2025 Champions Trophy. If India fails to perform in the mega event, the 43-year-old faces a serious threat of being removed from the job with his position set to be reevaluated after the mega event scheduled to take from February 19 to March 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"If India doesn't do well in the Champions Trophy, the head coach's position could become untenable. Yes, his contract runs till the 2027 World Cup but the process of evaluation continues.Sport is result-oriented and till now, Gambhir hasn't given any tangible results," a senior BCCI source was quoted saying by PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Gautam Gambhir's Forgettable Tenure As India Coach

Gambhir took charge of the team in July last year, and the men in Blue lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years. Later, the team lost a home Test series after 12 years against New Zealand, ending a world record streak. The 3-0 series defeat marked the first instance in history of India being whitewashed on home soil in a Test series of three or more matches.
The team's run of winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) for four consecutive times in a row also ended as Australia won the elusive trophy after 10 years. The Pat Cummins-led side won the five-match series by a 3-1 margin despite losing the first Test.
Alongside the poor results, there have been reports of a rift within the team too. Tensions between head coach Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma have been evident.
Gambhir signed a three and half-year contract with the BCCI which ends in December 2027.
