Mohammad Amir has shown interest in participating in IPL 2026 and he aims to represent Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the T20 league. Speaking on a Pakistani show, Amir said: "By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL and if given the chance then why not." It is to be noted that Pakistani players are banned from participating in IPL.
IPL 2008 remains the only season when the Pakistani players were allowed to take part in the T20 league. So why is Amir showing interest in participating in IPL 2026? Here we see how it can happen -
A Pakistani player can participate in the IPL if he has another country's passport. A decade ago, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood participated in IPL despite the ban. Mahmood had shifted to the UK and he had a British passport.
Amir can also play in IPL by acquiring a British passport. He had moved to the UK few years back. Speaking to ARY News in 2023, Amir hinted about getting citizenship in 2024 but that probably hasn't happened yet.
"First, I will not play for England. I have played for Pakistan. Second (talking of IPL), there is one more year to go. What will be the scenario at that time....I always say that I go step by step. We don't know what will happen tomorrow and I start thinking about playing IPL in 2024. I don't know where I will be a year later. No one knows about the future. When I get my passport ...whatever the best opportunity will be and what I will get...I will avail it," he said in 2023.
It remains to be seen if Amir will be allowed to register for IPL or not. Even if he registers for the league, he will only be shortlisted if any of the teams asks for his name to be included.
