Rohit Sharma-led India will square off against Mitchell Santner's New Zealand in the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy on Sunday (March 9). Both teams dominated the proceedings en route to the final. India remained undefeated in the league stage and defeated Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand. They defeated Australia in the semi-final to punch their ticket to the final.
NZ's only defeat in the league stage came against India. They registered a one-sided win over South Africa in the semi-final. It will be after 25 years that the two teams will lock horns in the final of a white-ball ICC event. Back in 2000, NZ defeated India in the final of the ICC Knockout Trophy to lift the title. It remains their only ICC white-ball title win so far. India are two-time Champions Trophy champion and are aiming to win the title for the third time.
The final will be played in Dubai. There is no prediction of rain and a complete 100-over game is on the cards. But what if the match is washed out? There is a reserve day in place but what if the additional day is also washed out? Will India win the title for defeating NZ in the league stage?
India and New Zealand will share the title if the final is washed out and both teams will be declared joint winners. The same thing happened in 2002. 23 years ago, both finals between India and Sri Lanka were washed out due to rain. As a result, India and SL shared the Champions Trophy. The same thing will happen again if the final is washed out.
There will be a Super Over if the final is tied. There will be another Super Over if the first Super Over is tied. Both teams will continue to play Super Overs until there is a clear winner. NZ lost the 2019 World Cup final on boundary count after their Super Over against England ended in a tie.
