India have had a terrific run in the Champions Trophy 2025, as they have won all their matches to qualify for the final on March 9 (Sunday) at the Dubai International Stadium, where they will take on New Zealand. Rohit Sharma has led the Indian team in style, becoming the first captain in history to qualify for the final of all ICC events (ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and World Test Championship). However, he is 37 years old and might be at the twilight of his career. Hence, the BCCI might have to take some tough calls regarding his future.
According to a report by The Times of India, the result of the India vs New Zealand Champions Trophy 2025 final is set to determine the future course of action for Rohit Sharma, as the BCCI looks to have a stable leadership keeping the ODI World Cup 2027 in mind.
The report also states that Rohit Sharma believes that there is still some cricket left in him, and he might not retire. But whether he would remain the Test and ODI captain after the Champions Trophy is set to be determined.
"Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy. Rohit himself understands the need to have a stable captain if the team wants to prepare for a World Cup. There have been talks with Kohli too but there doesn't seem to be much anxiety around him,” a BCCI source said.
Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir Already Had Discussions
The Times of India report also states that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have already had a discussion regarding the future course of action for Rohit Sharma with the BCCI and the Indian captain himself after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025 debacle.
Rohit Sharma himself was not averse to the idea of setting a roadmap for the team once the Champions Trophy 2025 ends.
