The on-field umpire was on top of his game during the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final between India and Australia on Tuesday (March 24) at the Dubai International Stadium leading to a couple of heated chats with Indian players during Australia's innings.
Shubman Gill was seen having a catch with the umpire during the overbreak almost immediately after he took Travis Head's catch. The match official was spotted warning Gill after he threw the ball almost immediately and reminded him that he needed to be in full control of the ball.
Later, Ravindra Jadeja and the umpire had a long conversation after he came to bowl in the 19th over of the match. The left-arm spinner was asked to remove a tap on his left hand. Although the star Indian all-round tried to justify his case, the umpire refused to relent leaving Jadeja with no choice but to bowl without the tape on his hand.
Why Ravindra Jadeja Had to Remove The Tape?
As per MCC's Laws of the Game, only a wicketkeeper is allowed to wear protective gloves, and in any other case, permission has to be taken from an umpire. While exceptions are made for fielders, and if bowlers are injured, the umpire did not give Jadeja any leeway with no injury to present. The strict stance from Richard Illingworth came because the tape was on his bowling hand.
"No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards. In addition, protection for the hand or fingers may be worn only with the consent of the umpires," says Laws 28.1.
Although Jadeja later suffered a bruise while fielding and showed his bleeding hand to the umpire. He was allowed to wear the tape after the incident.
