Rohit Sharma is currently captaining the Indian team with aplomb, leading them to three consecutive wins in the Champions Trophy 2025, qualifying for the semi-final of the tournament against Australia. Amidst this, the National spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, Shama Mohamed courted some controversy when she shared a derogatory remark on the Indian captain calling him 'fat' and the 'most unimpressive' India captain. She has received criticism from all quarters. Now, former India all-rounder and Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj Singh has fired back at the Congress leader.
"Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had," Shama Mohamed had written in a now-deleted post on X.
In an interaction with ANI, Yograj Singh said that Shama Mohamed should be ashamed for her comment. Bringing up Wasim Akram's 'banana' jibe at Pakistan bowlers, Yograj said that criticizing and attacking one's own players happen only in Pakistan, and not in India. He also said that if he were the Prime Minister he would ask the Congress leader to leave the country.
"I only want to say one thing, jiska kaam usee ko saaje aur kare to danda baaje (the work only suits those to whom it belongs; if done by anyone else, it is ruined). Indian cricketers, people and the land are more dear to me than my own life. If someone in the political system makes such a statement about a player who has brought pride to our nation, that person should be ashamed," Yograj said
"They have no right to stay in our nation. Cricket is our religion; we lost against New Zealand and Australia, and a lot of things were said about Rohit and Virat. We stood up for them. I feel so sad. These things happen in Pakistan. Their former star player said, 'Who will eat so many bananas?' (Taking a jibe at Wasim Akram). Action should be taken. This should not be tolerated. If I were the prime minister, I would have said, pack your bags and leave the country," he added.
BCCI Responds To Shama Mohamed Statement
BCCI secretary Devajeet Saikia has also slammed Shama Mohamed's 'unfortunate statement' on Rohit Sharma, that too in the middle of a marquee tournament like the Champions Trophy. He said that this kind of comment may have an effect on the entire team
"This is a very unfortunate statement. This kind of comment from responsible quarters, especially at a time when the country’s national team is in the middle of a marque ICC tournament is uncalled for. This kind of irresponsible derogatory and baseless statement may have some adverse effect on an individual or the entire team. Therefore, I hope people can refrain from passing comments for their own personal publicity," Saikia said in an interaction with Times Now.
