India secured their spot in the semi-final as the top team from Group A with a 44-run win against New Zealand on March 2 (Sunday). They will next take on Australia in the semi-final on March 4 (Tuesday) in Dubai. Varun Chakravarthy, who came in the playing XI in place of Harshit Rana, was the star of the show vs New Zealand as he decimated the Kiwi batting order with a five-wicket haul, becoming the Indian to take the least number of ODI matches for his maiden five-wicket haul. He has made a strong case for himself for selection in the semi-final, but Rohit Sharma has dropped a massive hint that he might be dropped too.
India played four spinners against New Zealand- Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. Speaking before the semi-final, Rohit Sharma said that he has not decided yet whether they would go for the same combination or not. There is a possibility of not going for four spinners in the lineup, and it all depends on the conditions.
"Look, the game just got over now. We really need to think, even if we want to play four spinners, how we can squeeze four spinners. If we don't, then we don't. Whatever works for us in terms of the bowling options, we will try and do that. The reason I say that is because the conditions here are – we are very much aware of the conditions, and we know exactly what works and what doesn't work. So, we'll just give it a day. We'll think about it, what is the right combination to go with? But it is tempting," Rohit said.

'Varun Chakravarthy Showed What He Is Capable Of'

Rohit Sharma praised Varun Chakravarthy for his superlative performance against New Zealand. However, he emphasized the fact that India will only pick the playing XI, assessing Australia's batting and what type of bowling combination would work against them.
"No, look, He just showed what he's capable of. Now, it is up to us to think and see how we can get that combination right. Obviously, look, he got a game. He did everything that was asked for. And I said it at the post-match as well that he's got something different about him," Rohit said.
"And when he gets it right, he knocks people over and he takes five-five wickets. It is very tempting to think about what to do, which is a good headache to have. We'll just try and assess. We just want to go back and think about what the Australian batting lineup will look like and how we can try and see what kind of bowling options will work against them," he added.
