Gautam Gambhir has had a forgettable stint as India's head coach so far. Under him, India lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka after 27 years. India lost a home Test series after 12 years and were whitewashed by New Zealand. India kicked off the Australia Test series with a win but lost the five-match series 1-3.
The BCCI conducted a review meeting after the Australia tour and PTI has reported that Gambhir's position as head coach will be evaluated after the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The report adds that Gambhir was not pleased with star players during the Australia tour. The players, reportedly, gave specific demands about hotels and practice timings. The report adds that Gambhir wants to dismantle the superstar culture in Team India.
"Gambhir wants to end the superstar culture that has been prevalent for so many years now. As captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, he had dropped Brendon McCullum from the playing XI for the IPL final against CSK. He has come here to dismantle the superstar culture and that's what has caused discomfort for some playing members," a source told PTI.
The issues in Team India's dressing room were palpable when R Ashwin announced his retirement after the third Test match and returned home. Rohit Sharma revealed that Ashwin had to be convinced to play the second Test match.
Rohit, who is still India's Test and ODI captain, stood down from the fifth Test match. A day before the game, Gambhir didn't confirm whether Rohit would be part of the final XI.
PTI reported that Gambhir denied a BCCI administrator's request to let Rohit play the fifth Test match and bow out of the longest format. Jasprit Bumrah captained India in the first and fifth Test matches.
During the game, Rohit confirmed that he was still Team India's captain and didn't have any plans to retire. The right-handed batsman is likely to turn up for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.
Meanwhile, there are reports that BCCI will make it compulsory for players to travel in the team bus. The board might not allow the players' families to stay with them for the complete duration of a series.
