KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India will soon appoint a new ODI and Test captain
  • Jasprit Bumrah has been the vice-captain of the red-ball team
  • Suryakumar Yadav is leading the T20I team
Post the 2025 Champions Trophy, Team India is likely to have a new captain as Rohit Sharma's tenure is likely to come to an end. While Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the team in T20 cricket last year, a new ODI and Test captain is likely to be appointed later this year.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, it was decided in the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) review meeting that Rohit will lead the side till the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, it is unlikely that Rohit will tour England for a five-match Test series and Jasprit Bumrah is all set to lead the side.

Gautam Gautam Gambhir vs Selectors Over New Captain?

Bumrah has been the Test team's vice-captain for a while and already led the team in three Test matches including the first and last test of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar trophy. However, the 31-year-old is not seen as a long-term option due to fitness concerns.
The published information states that while Bumrah will take charge of the side, it is considered important to appoint a strong vice-captain by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. The selectors are in favour of making Rishabh Pant the new captain in Test cricket but head coach Gautam Gambhir is in favour of Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Jaiswal is yet to make his ODI debut but has taken the stage by storm in both Test and ODI cricket after making his debut in 2023. The left-handed batter has played 19 Tests and scored 1798 runs at an average of 52.9 with four centuries including two double tons.
The report also states that Bumrah could take charge of the side in ODI cricket too with a strong vice-captain behind him. It is unlikely that the BCCI will opt for three different captains and with Suryakumar Yadav not in the scheme of things in ODI cricket, the star pacer could be given charge of the team in both Test and ODI. His deputy will lead the side when Bumrah is rested in a similar manner to how Australia has managed Pat Cummins.
