KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The 33-year-old last played for India in 2017
  • He has played 6 Test matches for India
  • Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future is at risk
With the Indian Test team heading for transition, especially in the batting unit, following a humiliating 2024-25 season in which they lost a home series to New Zealand before facing defeat against Australia, the futures of skipper Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli are under major doubt after an extended lean patch with the bat.
Karun Nair has emerged as a surprise contender to make a comeback into the Indian team after a stunning run of form in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. With 664 runs in six innings, Nair has set the world record for the most runs without being dismissed in List A cricket. He has made four consecutive centuries, which is the joint second-most in history in the 50-over format.
According to a report by Indian Express, Nair is now back on the radar of the national selectors due to his all-round game and ability to play spin well. The 33-year-old last played for India in 2017 against Australia at Dharamshala.
In December 2016, Nair became the second Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket after reaching the milestone against England in Chennai.
Overall, the right-handed batter played six Test matches for India and scored 374 runs in seven innings at an average of 62.33. Apart from the knock of 303 against England, he never managed to score a half-century.
Nair has completed a remarkable transformation after finding himself sidelined from the Karnataka side across formats in the 2022-23 season. The decision to join Vidarbha has turned around his career.
Nair played a key role in helping the Akshay Wadkar-led side reach the final of the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy with 690 runs in 10 matches at an average of 40.58 with two centuries. In the ongoing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, he has 289 runs in six innings at an average of 48.16.
