The BCCI held a review meeting to discuss India's forgettable Australia tour on Saturday (January 11). The officials held discussions over a range of issues. They also discussed the road ahead for captain Rohit Sharma and former captain, Virat Kohli. While there was no announcement regarding Rohit's future as captain, there is a blockbuster update on him.
Dainik Jagran has reported that Rohit will stay captain till the 2025 Champions Trophy. Rohit reportedly told the BCCI that he would fully support his successor.
Rohit's future as the Test captain is in doubt. Jasprit Bumrah captained India in two Tests Down Under and he will be an automatic replacement for Rohit. Bumrah-led India kicked off the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a win.
As far as ODI cricket goes, Shubman Gill was appointed the vice-captain of the white-ball teams in 2024. Rohit might continue as the ODI captain as there is no ready-to-go replacement for him. India enjoyed huge success under him and made it to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
India enter the 2025 Champions Trophy as favourites and positive results in that tournament should see Rohit continue as the captain. Suryakumar Yadav is India's T20I captain.
Players asked to play domestic cricket
PTI has reported that the star players have been asked to play in the Ranji Trophy. But there are bleak chances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli featuring in the upcoming round of the first-class tournament.
Rohit hasn't played Ranji Trophy since 2015 while Virat last featured in the red-ball tournament in 2012. The Ranji Trophy will resume on January 23. The India-England ODI series will start on February 6.
The three ODIs are scheduled to be played on February 6, 9 and 12 in Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad, respectively. The two teams will lock horns in 5 T20Is before the ODI series.
