Mohammed Shami Returns, Sanju Samson IN! Predicted Strongest Playing XI For T20I Series Vs England

India are all set to return to white-ball cricket from January 22 as they begin their T20I series against England. BCCI have already announced their squad for the all-important five-match series. While many players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj have been rested keeping the Champions Trophy 2025 in mind, the big news coming in is that Mohammed Shami returns to the Indian side for more than a year of being out due to injury.
Sanju Samson To Open
With Yashasvi Jaiswal not part of the squad, Abhishek Sharma will open the batting. On the other hand, Sanju Samson will retain his pace as the wicketkeeper-batter and opener. He has cemented his place in T20Is, after a stellar run of form in the shortest format in 2024, where he slammed 3 hundreds, including becoming the first-ever player to hit consecutive tons in T20Is.
Nitish Reddy IN; No Washington Sundar
Tilak Varma is also in great form and will come out at no.3. Captain Suryakumar Yadav will come in at no.4, with Nitish Kumar Reddy at no.5. Reddy had a stellar T20I series debut against Bangladesh and will be fresh off a brilliant Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rinku Singh will come in at no.6, with Hardik Pandya at no.7. Both Pandya and Nitish Reddy will act as the third and fourth pace bowling options in the squad.
Mohammed Shami Leads Pace Attack
Axar Patel will provide batting depth at no.8, in addition to bowling four overs of effective left-arm spin. Mohammed Shami will lead the pace attack, coming back into the Indian side, and Arshdeep Singh will ably support him. Varun Chakravarthy will lead the spin attack, and has forced his way into the playing XI over Ravi Bishnou owing to a stellar run of form in 2024.
