Rohit Sharma-led India will make their much-awaited return to the ODI format in the three-match series against England. The Men in Blue only played 3 ODIs in 2024. They suffered a 0-2 defeat against Sri Lanka and failed to win a 50-over game last year. With an aim to win the ICC Champions Trophy, India will make their return to the ODI format next month.
Rohit is confirmed to lead India in the Champions Trophy. Rohit-led India made it to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup while they won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Rohit, who is eyeing his second ICC trophy as the captain, is on the cusp of a huge milestone. He is just 134 runs away from completing 11000 runs in the ODI format. The right-handed batsman has scored 10866 runs in 257 innings across 265 matches.
Should Rohit score 134 runs in the next 19 innings, he will become the second-fastest batsman to complete 11000 runs in ODIs. The record belongs to Virat Kohli, who breached the milestone in only 222 innings during the 2019 World Cup.
Fastest batsmen to score 11000 ODI runs Innings
Virat Kohli 222
Sachin Tendulkar 276
Ricky Ponting 286
Sourav Ganguly 288
Jacques Kallis 293
Interestingly, Virat completed his 11000th run while leading Team India and Rohit can also reach the milestone while leading the ODI team. Sachin Tendulkar sits at the second spot. He took 276 innings to complete 11000 ODI runs.
Rohit made his ODI debut in 2007 but he was in and out of the side for the next 6 years. MS Dhoni's decision to make him open the innings early in 2013 proved to be a boon for Rohit and he cemented his spot.
Rohit's success with the bat saw him become the vice-captain of the white-ball teams in 2017. He replaced Virat Kohli as the T20I and ODI captain in 2021. Rohit also leads the Test team.
