Rohit Sharma-led India will take on Mitchell Santner's New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy final on Sunday (March 9). It will be the first time since the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy that the two teams will lock horns in the final of a white-ball ICC event. The BlackCaps defeated the Men in Blue in the final 25 years ago.
Rohit will have his task cut out and his future as a player and captain could rely on the final match's result. Shubman Gill, who came to interact with the media on the eve of the final, addressed the query over Rohit's retirement.
The India opener revealed that there hasn't been any discussion about it. "We have not discussed it. All the chatter and the discussion are about winning the match. And what we have to do to win the match. He has not spoken to the team about this or to me. I think Rohit is thinking about winning the final as well. I think he is focusing on winning the Champions Trophy first. I think, once the match gets over tomorrow, he will take a call, but I have not heard of this from anyone in the team," he said.
Rohit and Virat Kohli quit T20I cricket after winning the 2024 World Cup. It remains to be seen if any one of them decides to give up ODI cricket too. Both are active in ODIs and Tests.
Shubman was appointed Rohit's deputy in 2024 and he will be the frontrunner to replace him if the India captain decides to retire. Rohit might continue to play ODIs till the 2027 World Cup if the Men in Blue win the Champions Trophy final. Under him, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The 2025 CT final will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Sunday (March 9). The first ball will be bowled at 2:30 PM IST.
