Rohit Sharma Creates History, Breaks All-Time Record To Become First Captain In The World To Lead A Team To ODI World Cup, WTC, T20 WC, Champions Trophy (Source: AP)

India avenged the ODI World Cup loss and defeated Australia by four wickets in the semifinal to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy final. Opting to bat, Australia looked set for 280+ score, courtesy of 73 by Steve Smith, but a late fightback from India saw the team get bowled out for 264 despite Alex Carey's 61. Chasing the stiff target, chase master Virat Kohli continued his rich form and scored 84 to lead India to a comfortable win.
Meanwhile, Indian captain Rohit Sharma created history after leading India to yet another ICC final. He became the first captain to lead a team to the final of ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, and WTC. Before the Champions Trophy final, he led India to a T20 World Cup win earlier this year. In 2023, he took India to the finals of the WTC and the ODI World Cup. Unfortunately, he lost the finals of the WTC and ODI World Cup but managed to lead the team to glory in the T20 World Cup. Rohit would eye another title on March 9 when India face one of New Zealand or South Africa who'll cross swords in the second semifinal.
The record will be very tough to beat provided that teams often prefer different captains for different formats these days.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was a happy man after leading the team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final and lauded the batters for making a stiff chase look easy. He highlighted the depth in Team India and said it remains one of the key criteria when picking the squad for a big event.
"Till the last ball is bowled, nothing is certain. That's how this game is. Halfway through the game, we felt like it's a reasonable score. We had to really bat well to get that score because the nature of the pitch doesn't allow you to just come in and keep playing the way you want to play. We were very clinical with the bat. Yes, we got the runs in the 48th over, but I thought we were calm and composed in our chase.
"Looked better (pitch). That's been the nature of the surfaces here - it's very uncertain. The one which we played today played slightly better than the one we played against New Zealand. The talks that we are having within our group is about playing good cricket, understanding the situation and then taking it from there, not to read too much into what the pitch is doing. There are a lot of experienced guys within the group, we'll leave it up to them to make those decisions when they're out in the middle. That's something that I really wanted to have - six bowling options and at the same time how I can get batting till No. 8 as well. It was a bit challenging as well. When we were making up the squad, this is something that we discussed at length - how we can have six bowling options and at the same get that batting depth as well. The guys are there to know exactly what is required out of them," added. Rohit Sharma
