Champions Trophy 2025: Medal Goes Missing After Virat Kohli Named 'Fielder of the Match'. (Source: BCCI)
India beat New Zealand by 44 runs on Sunday to win Group A and set up a Champions Trophy semifinal match against Australia.
Spinner Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball, taking 5/42 in only his second one-day international.
Star batter Virat Kohli took the field for his 300th one-day international. Kohli became only the seventh cricketer to represent India in 300 or more ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar leads the way with 463 ODIs – the most by any player in world cricket.
After the match, Kohli was also named India's best fielder. In a video released by the BCCI on its social media on Monday, fielding coach, T Dilip, named three contenders for the medal—Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer and Kohli. But when throwdown specialist Udenka Nuwan Senevirathne got up to hand over the medal, it was nowhere to be found.
"Medal hi nehi hai. Kaha hai? (The medal isn't there. Where is it?)," said Axar Patel in jest.
Eventually, Axar found the medal, and Nuwan handed it over to Kohli for his efforts in the game against New Zealand.
India vs Australia
India will face Australia in the semi-finals of Champions Trophy. However, India's record against the Aussies in ICC tournaments has not been a good one with their last win against Australia in the knockout stage of an ICC event coming way back in 2011 World Cup quarterfinal.
India lost to Australia in the semifinals of the 2015 ODI World Cup and in the title clash of the 2023 ODI World Cup before succumbing to them in the World Test Championship final in 2023.
