Varun Chakravarthy made a hash of what was a relatively easy chance to get rid off Will Young early in New Zealand innings during the final Group A match in Dubai on Sunday.
It all happened in the third over of the game when Hardik Pandya took the pace off to outfox Young, who ended up getting the toe-end of the bat, and the ball went towards mid-on.
Varun, running sideways, went for the catch but ended up getting his fingertips to it and then shockingly kicked it to the boundary. Hardik hid his face in disappointment, and the other members of the team were shocked.
India vs New Zealand Champions Trophy
Invited to bat, India scored 249/9 against New Zealand in their last Group A match of the Champions Trophy on Sunday. Shreyas Iyer top-scored for India with 79 off 98 balls while Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel chipped in with 45 and 42 respectively.
For New Zealand, Matt Henry (5/42) grabbed a five-wicket haul to be the most successful bowler. Reflecting on his performance, a visibly delighted Henry said, "I think the way we came out there and the surface helped and put India under pressure. Very happy with the total but still need to do a big job with the bat. We talked about getting wickets and the pressure was getting us wickets. There are some ebbs and flows on this wicket and if we can put the pressure back on, that should help us."
India and New Zealand have already reached the semifinals after winning their earlier matches, and Sunday's winner will top Group A.
