Ignored by the selectors for the 2025 Champions Trophy, out-of-favour batsman Karun Nair slammed a century in the Ranji Trophy final. The right-handed batsman scored a brilliant 86 in the first innings before getting run out. He didn't miss the opportunity to breach the three-figure mark in the second innings and smashed the 23rd first-class century of his career.
Nair has scored 837 runs in 9 Ranji Trophy matches and he can breach the 900-run mark. He is at the fourth spot in the list of batsman with the most runs in the ongoing Ranji season.
Nair enjoyed a dream run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and piled up 779 runs in 8 innings he played. His tally included 5 centuries and a half-century. He batted an average of 389.50.
Nair's brilliance wasn't enough for him to break into the ODI squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. He wasn't even included on the list of reserve players.
Nair, who last played for India in 2017, is now eyeing a spot in the Test team and a century in the final will surely draw the selectors' attention. India are scheduled to tour England for a five-match Test series after IPL 2025. Nair could be rewarded for his dream run in the season.
Karun Nair's career
Karun Nair made his India debut in an ODI against Zimbabwe in 2016. He made his Test debut against England in November 2016. Nair did the unthinkable and slammed a triple-century in only his third game. He and Virender Sehwag are two Indians to achieve this milestone.
Nair was dropped from the playing XI after his triple-century. He made his return in the playing XI but failed to breach the 30-run mark in the next four innings he played. He was part of the England tour in 2018 but didn't get to play a game.
