Australia are currently taking on Afghanistan in their final group B game of the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday. This is a must-win game for Australia, as a victory would guarantee them a place in the semi-final of the competition. Afghanistan batterd first and managed to put on a fighting total of 273. The Aussies began the chase with a bang, courtesy Travis Head, Matthew Short and Steve Smith. They have now achieved a massive record in the tournament's history.
In the first powerplay i.e. the first 10 overs of the second innings, Australia slammed 90 runs against Afghanistan. Travis Head scored the majority of these runs slamming 48 from 32 balls while Matthew Short and Steve Smith scored 20 and 13, respectively.

Australia have thus become the team with the most runs in the first powerplay of a Champions Trophy game. They have broken the record of Sri Lanka who scored 87 runs in the first powerplay of the Champions Trophy 2017 match against South Africa at the Oval.

Australia also become the first team in history to score in excess of 70 runs in the powerplay three times in the history of the Champions Trophy. The first did so against Sri Lanka in 2012. In 2025, they have done so twice against England and now against Afghanistan.
Atal, Omarzai Push Afghanistan To 273
Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Australia kept on taking wickets at regular intervals. But Sediiqullah Atal stood form on one end as he slammed 85. In the end it was Azmatullah Omarzai who slammed 67 to push Afghanistan to a fighting total of 273.
Ben Dwarshius was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets, while Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa picked up 2 wickets each.
