Mumbai came into the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season as the defending champions, as they looked to seal their record 43rd title. However, their campaign came to an end in the semi-final when they lost to Vidarbha by 80 runs. A lot of international stars were in action for Mumbai, after BCCI issued a mandate that players will have to play domestic cricket to be in contention for selection in the Indian test. Players like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube were in action for the side in this edition of the tournament. However, Mumbai chief selector Sanjay Patil was not at all impressed with their performance and attitudes.
In an interaction with Sportstar, Sanjay Patil said that he was very disappointed with the way the international stars played for Mumbai. He did not see the dedication from them and claimed that they were only happy signing autographs.
"Very upset with the way they played [in the Ranji Trophy]. It was something that’s not expected from Test players and the so-called Indian cricketers. The kind of dedication we experienced from our seniors was never on display from the current lot. If you are joining the team and are happy only to be signing autographs, it speaks volumes about you," Patil said.
Patil Blames International Stars For Semi-Final Defeat
Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube both had disastrous displays in the semi-final vs Vidarbha. Sanjay Patil inferred that the international stars' poor performance was the difference in the semi-final. In fact, he took Suryakumar Yadav's name too.
“That was the biggest difference between Vidarbha and Mumbai in the semifinals. The greed and grit to win was never seen in the semifinal, or throughout since the second half of the Ranji Trophy. [I am] Totally upset with all the big players, including Suryakumar Yadav," the Mumbai chief selector added.
