Harbhajan Singh has blasted BCCI for ignoring Karun Nair. The right-handed batsman has been enjoying a purple patch in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and he could be on his way back to Team India. Nair last played for Team India in 2017. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan asked if not having tattoos and not wearing fancy clothes have cost Nair.
"Many are selected on the basis of just two games, some are just selected basis the IPL. So, why are rules different for him? People say Rohit and Virat are out of form, and you're sending them to Ranji. But those who are playing Ranji and scoring runs… why are you ignoring them? When will these guys play? They are scoring runs here," the India legend said.
"Different rules for different people… that shouldn't be the way. When they are scoring runs, you need to play him, right? He doesn't have tattoos, doesn't wear fancy clothes, is that the reason you're not picking him? Does he not work hard?”
Nair was dropped from Team India after the England tour in 2018. He looked set to play the fifth Test of the series but was pipped by Hanuma Vihari, who joined the team for the last two Tests.
Vihari retained his spot going ahead while Nair was dropped. Nair has only played 6 Tests and 2 ODIs. He has 374 runs in seven innings. He created history during the home series against England in 2016 and slammed a triple-century in Chennai.
He was dropped for the one-off Test against Bangladesh early in 2017 and returned during the Australia series. Nair now plays for Vidarbha. He is enjoying a dream run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has scored 664 runs in six innings.
While the chances of Nair making it to the Champions Trophy squad are bleak, he can make his return for the England Test series in June.
