'I Was A Better Batsman Than Yuvraj Singh': Father Yograj Raises Eyebrows; His Average Was 0.50 In ODIs (Source: PTI)
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh said he was a better batsman than his son, Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj's talent was exceptional, and he delivered some memorable performances for India. He was rated as one of the best the country produced and was instrumental in India's two World Cup wins in 2007 and 2011. The southpaw scored 17 centuries and over 10000 international runs across formats.
Meanwhile, Yograj Singh played six ODIs and one Test but failed to make any significant impact. His ODI batting average was a mere 0.50, but he did manage to pick four wickets. Despite Yuvraj's massive success, Yograj felt that the Indian cricketer failed to reach his true potential. "I was a much better batsman than Yuvraj. Yuvraj Singh, if he has worked even 10 percent like his father, he would have become a great cricketer" he said on Unfiltered by Samdish.
Yuvraj was outstanding in the ODI World Cup 2011 and scored 362 runs in addition to taking 15 wickets, winning the Player of the Tournament Award. Yuvraj was battling cancer during the event. Yograj said that he would have been a proud father even if Yuvraj had died from cancer and India won the World Cup.
“For our country, if Yuvraj Singh had died from cancer and had won India the World Cup, I would have been a proud father. I still am very proud of him. I have told him this over the phone as well. I wanted him to play even when he was spitting blood. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t die. Win this World Cup for India,' said Yograj.
Yuvraj was at the peak of his career when he was hit by the cancer news. Yuvraj was a fighter and he did not give up. He defeated the disease and made a comeback to the Indian cricket team. Unfortunately, Yuvraj couldn't emulate his before-cancer performance and was inconsistent which led to his ouster from the team. He announced his retirement in 2019.
