Shreyas Iyer will lead the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. Iyer was roped in by the franchise for a whopping 26.75 crores. at the IPL mega auction. Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title in IPL 2024, was the front-runner to lead the team in IPL 2025 and his appointment did not come as a surprise. PBKS will be the third franchise Iyer will be part of, having previously played for Delhi Capitals (DC) and KKR.
Iyer was appointed the DC captain midway through the 2018 season and he helped the team qualify for the playoffs in each of the following three seasons, including a runners-up finish in 2020. This year, he led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and finished fourth in the list of most runs, scoring 345 runs, including a hundred, at a strike rate of 188.
Iyer will collaborate with Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings. The franchise roped in Ponting for four years. Iyer and Ponting formed a successful captain-coach partnership for the Capitals and would look to emulate the performance for PBKS.
"I wanted to work with Shreyas," Ponting told Star Sports after the auction. "I've worked with him before and he is a great guy and a great player. He'll be a great leader for our team if we decide to go that way, which I'm pretty sure we probably will. And obviously, he was the championship-winning captain last year. So there are lots of great things about bringing him to Punjab."
