Rohit Sharma To Lead India In ICC Champions Trophy, Star Bowler In Contention To Be Next Captain: Report
Rohit Sharma will have his hands full when India participate in the Champions Trophy starting from next month. The 3-1 loss in the Border Gavaskar Trophy tainted his captaincy to some extent.
Rohit endured very poor form in the Australia series and opted to sit out the last Test match in Sydney as India crashed out of the World Test Championship. In the white ball, Rohit's captaincy record will be hard to match. Under his leadership, India showed their unbeatable antics during the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup but lost to a superior Australia in the final.
India also ended their long title drought in West Indies as they defeated South Africa in the final to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 title. As the squad announcement chatter is in full swing, a BCCI source told ANI that Rohit is all set to lead the team in the Champions Trophy.
The source also added that Jasprit Bumrah is in contention to succeed Rohit as the next Indian skipper. Bumrah successfully auditioned for the role in Perth when he led the team to historic win against Australia.
Rohit's stock has further fallen during the 2024/25 Test season as he could only amass 164 runs at a poor average of 10.93 with a high score of 52. His leadership acumen also encountered a massive hit as he lost six Tests in 2024, including a 3-0 whitewash at home to New Zealand.
Rohit will have a bigger Test in the ICC Champions Trophy. India have been clubbed in Group A which also consists of Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand. Except for India's matches, the rest of the tournament will be hosted by Pakistan. India will begin their campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh and will take on archrivals Pakistan on February 23 in Dubai.
