Gautam Gambhir Upset With Rohit Sharma After India Captain Delays Retirement: Report

India registered a heavy series defeat in Australia where they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a margin of 1-3, thus also losing their chance to qualify for the WTC 2025 final. Rohit Sharma was heavily criticized for his performance in the series. The India captain scored only 31 runs in 5 innings, and even dropped himself from the final Test against Australia. There were even rumors that Rohit would retire soon from Test matches, after the series. There were also allegations of a rift between the Indian captain and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

In a shocking report by The Times of India, it has come to light that Rohit Sharm had made up his mind about retiring from Test Cricket after the fourth Test in Melbourne. This was especially after he failed to perform by returning to the top of the order, dropping Shubman Gill in the process. He did this after back-to-back failures at no.6 in the second and third Test matches.

However, the report states that he reversed the decision to retire before the fifth Test at Sydney after a few 'well-wishers' from outside changed his mind

“Rohit Sharma had decided to call it a day after the fourth Test but his well wishers intervered and the veteran changed his mind. We could have seen another player taking retirement in Australia,”

This change of heart by Rohit Sharma did not sit well with Gautam Gambhir. The coach and captain did not see eye-to-eye on many decisions throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy according to the report. This rift was quite evident during the pre-match press conference in Sydney when he was asked whether Rohit would be in the playing XI. The Indian head coach replied by saying that they would take the decision based on the pitch and the conditions.
