India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI officials will meet on Saturday, January 11, to review the disastrous tour Down Under, while the selectors come together to decide on the Champions Trophy team. The future of ace India batter Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma will be discussed in this much-anticipated meeting.
The consecutive series losses to New Zealand (home) and Australia (away) and the diminishing returns with the bat have put Kohli and Rohit under the scanner.
According to a report in PTI, the plan will be discussed in detail, whether to begin the transition from February's Champions Trophy or wait for the current cycle to end with the ICC tournament.
It is expected that Kohli and Rohit will get another opportunity to redeem themselves at the Champions Trophy, the 50-over format in which they have always flourished.
Gambhir, the selectors and the BCCI officials may take into consideration the fact that both Kohli and Rohit have played just three ODIs this year after the 2023 World Cup at home and that could be too light a sample size to make a final call on their 50-over career.
Both Kohli and Rohit endured different fortunes in the series against Sri Lanka as well. While the former amassed 24, 14 and 20 in Colombo, Rohit walked away with scores of 58, 64 and 35 against the Lankans.
But overall, Kohli has been a champion performer in ODIs, his staple format and a good outing in the Champions Trophy could bring him and Rohit, back into a good frame of mind as well.
Kohli and Rohit's Test futures are different though. The next assignment is an away five-match series against England and Gambhir, Agarkar and the BCCI officials will assess the drying runs from the duo in the longest format.
In the most recent outing against Australia, Kohli, despite a century in Perth, could garner just 190 runs at an average of 23.75 while Rohit, who skipped the first Test and opted out of the fifth game, made 31 runs at a dismal average of 6.2.
