Former Australia cricketer Greg Chappell has said that Harry Brook is a batting sensation whose performances and approach he compares to the 'great' Sachin Tendulkar. In the 24 Tests Brook has played, he averages a stunning 58.48 and has become the lynchpin of the England batting lineup, with the senior pro Joe Root around him to guide along.
Chappell has likened Brook to Tendulkar, saying that the England batter boasts a simple but effective batting method. He compared Brook and Tendulkar's numbers from their first three years of playing.
At the start of his Test career, the Indian legend batted at Nos. 6 and 7 positions, while Brook batted in the top and middle order, which means the latter has had more opportunities to bat.
"Harry Brook, a batting sensation whose performances and approach I compare to the great Sachin Tendulkar. Remarkably, Brook’s early career stats suggest he might even have outpaced the Indian maestro in terms of impact at the same stage," Chappell wrote in his column for the Sydney Morning Herald.
"At just 25, Brook has rapidly become one of the most talked-about cricketers in the world. He boasts a simple but devastatingly effective batting method. Like Tendulkar in his early years, Brook doesn’t move excessively in the crease before the ball is delivered," Chappell added.
In his short career, Brook has registered eight hundreds and 10 fifties. He scored 123 and 55 in the Wellington Test against New Zealand last month, capping off a brilliant 2024.
On the other hand, Tendulkar, who started his Test career in 1989, batted at Nos. 6 and 7 until January 1992. In his first 14 Tests, he batted in the lower middle order, which makes the comparison based on numbers somewhat unfounded. After that, Tendulkar made the No.4 slot his own.
