KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal scripted history at the MCG
  • The 23-year-old scored half-centuries in both innings
  • Jaiswal is India's leading run-getter in the series
Despite India's poor showing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Yashasvi Jaiswal continued to enhance his reputation as one of the best Test batters in world cricket at the moment with a remarkable display in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as he led a lone fight with the bat for India over the two innings.
The 23-year-old made a knock of 82 in the first innings before being run out following a mix-up with Virat Kohli. The youngster made a gritty knock of 84 as he gave India hopes of a draw before being dismissed by Pat Cummins in controversial fashion.
The left-handed batter ended 2024 with a stunning tally of 1478 runs at an average of 54.74. Only Joe Root made more runs than him this year across the world. Jaiswal's tally is the second-highest by an Indian in a calendar year, behind Sachin Tendulkar (1562 in 2010).

Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History

Jaiswal scripted history by becoming the first visiting batter in 60 to score two 80+ scores against Australia in the same Test match at the MCG. England's Herbert Sutcliffe in 1925 and Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad in 1964 are the only players from an away team to achieve the feat before Jaiswal.
Overall, Jaiswal is the 7th player in history to achieve the feat with Australian stars David Warner, Ricky Ponting, Shane Watson, and Don Bradman. However, Jaiswal is the first to score two 80+ scores at the MCG without getting a ton.
The World No. 5 Test batter is the 13th visiting batter to score two 80+ scores against Australia in the same match. Virat Kohli, Mohinder Amarnath, and Vijay Hazare are the only other Indians to achieve the feat.
Jaiswal is only the second batter from the away team to hit two 80+ scores in a Test match on Australian soil without getting a ton. The only other instance of the same happening was in 1964 when South Africa's Trevor Goddard got scores of 80 and 84 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Jaiswal is the only fifth Indian batter after Rusi Modi (vs West Indies, Kolkata, 1948), Mohinder Amarnath (vs West Indies, Bridgetown 1983), Rahul Dravid (vs Sri Lanka, Mumbai, 1997), and VVS Laxman (vs West Indies, Bridgetown, 1948).
Jaiswal is India's highest run-getter so far in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) with 359 runs in eight innings with one century and two half-centuries.
