Nitish Kumar Reddy continued his purple patch in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and slammed his maiden Test century at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on the third day of the fourth Test match. As Nitish slammed a boundary to complete his century, his father got emotional and shed tears in the stands.
Nitish's father was spotted praying as he was nearing his century. He shed tears and celebrated with the person next to him as his son breached the elusive three-figure mark in the 115th over.
Nitish and Washington Sundar rescued Team India after the visitors lost 2 wickets in the first session. The duo added 127 runs for the 8th wicket. Sundar departed for a well-made 50 off 162 balls.
Nitish batted with a quicker strike rate than Sundar and completed his century off 171 balls. He would have missed out on his century had it not been for Mohammed Siraj.
Siraj successfully played the last 3 balls of the 114th over after Pat Cummins dismissed Jasprit Bumrah. Nitish's father namedropped Siraj while talking to Adam Gilchrist after the play was suspended due to rain.
"For our family, it's a special day and we cannot forget this day in our life. He has been performing well since the age group of 14-15 and now in international cricket, it's a very special feeling. I was very tensed. Only the last wicket was remaining. Thankfully Siraj managed to survive," Nitish's father, Mutyala Reddy said.
Nitish is still out there in the middle and is batting on 105 off 176 balls. The play was soon suspended after Nitish's ton due to rain. India are 9 down for 358 after 116 overs and still trail by 116 runs. The batters will aim to score as many runs as possible early on day 4. Australia will aim for that one wicket in the very first over of the play.
