Steve Smith Creates History

Smith went past Joe Root and set the record for the most Test centuries against India in Test cricket history with his stunning knock at the MCG. The former Australian captain is the first player to score 11 tons against India in the longest format of the game and has reached the milestone in just 43 innings.
Players With The Most Test Tons vs India
Player Centuries vs India Innings vs India
Steve Smith 11 43
Joe Root 10 55
Gary Sobers 8 30
Viv Richards 8 41
Ricky Ponting 8 51
In the third Test, Smith also set the record for the most tons against India across all formats of international cricket. The 35-year-old has 16 centuries against India and went past Ricky Ponting's long-standing record (14). 5 out of Smith's 12 ODI centuries have come against the Men in Blue.
Among his 11 Test tons against India, Smith has scored seven in Australia, including two in this series. During the 2014-15 BGT, he scored a century in all four matches at Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Another ton followed at the SCG in 2021. He also reached the milestone three times during Australia's tour of India in 2017 with memorable knocks in Pune, Ranchi, and Dharamshala. Last year, he made a century against the Rohit Sharma-led side at the Oval in London at the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Smith also holds a unique record of being the only player in Test cricket history to score 10 more centuries against two different teams. The Australian cricket legend also has 10 tons against arch-rivals England.
