Many have called for Mohammed Shami to join the Indian team in Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, especially after their disappointing pace bowling performance in the second Test at Adelaide. However, it looks like Indian fans will have to wait a little longer, as Shami might not return to playing for India after more than a year in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He is instead focussing on coming back strongly in two upcoming mega tournaments.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Mohammed Shami may choose to not travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This is because he feels that he is not ready to play red-ball cricket right now. He is more focussed towards white-ball cricket right now, especially after excelling for Bengal in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy.
He is targeting to return for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Februrary , and then the IPL 2025 from March to May. He was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2025 mega auction for Rs 10 crore.

Shami Might Play Vijay Hazare Trophy

According to a BCCI source close to the proceedings, Mohammed Shami is keen on playing more domestic cricket, and is keen o playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy, wherehe can bowl 10 overs a game in three spells.
"The swelling seems to come and go. He himself is keen on playing more and more domestic cricket and hence the possibility of him once again playing Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal (starting December 21) looks imminent at the moment. He can then bowl at least three spells and 10 overs per game," the source said.
He also said that Shami is at the business end of his career, and hence he does not want to risk another injury if he bowls long spells in Australia.
"Shami is at the business end of his career. What if his knee acts up badly in Australia after a long spell? He will have to field on hard grounds. He missed the last IPL due to ankle surgery. This time, he has a hefty Rs 10 crore deal with SRH. You can't blame him if he wants to preserve himself for white ball format for now," he added.
