Mohamemed Shami set an all-time record in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash between Bengal and Chandigarh

While calls for Mohammed Shami's inclusion in the Indian team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia are growing, Shami set a massive all-time record on Monday (December 9) in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) pre-quarterfinal match between Bengal and Chandigarh at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Chandigarh won the toss and chose to bowl, but Bengal's top order collapsed, losing eight wickets for 114 runs in the 16th over. Shami then took charge, turning the match around with an impressive innings. The 35-year-old scored 32 runs off just 17 balls at a strike rate of 188.24, including three boundaries and two sixes, helping Bengal post a respectable 159.

Mohammed Shami Breaks All-Time Record

Shami's incredible knock which has set the platform for Bengal to reach the quarter-final broke the all-time record for the highest not-out score by a number 10 batter in SMAT history. Overall, Shami's knock is the second-highest by a batter walking out to bat at number 10 in the history of the compition behind Rajesh Mohanty (36) for Odisha against Chattisgarh in 2019.

This is also only Shami's highest score in T20 cricket beating his previous best of 21 runs in nine balls against Royal Challengers Bengalore (RCB) for Delhi Daredevils (DD) in the 2017 IPL. Today's effort was also only the second time in his T20 career, Shami hit a double dight score in the shortest format. Before this game, Shami had hit only two sixes in the shortest format, a tally he doubled today.
Shami made his mark with the ball as he took the wicket of opener Arslan Khan on the first over of the chase as the batter was dismissed for a golden duck. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) star bowled three overs in his first spell and gave away 13 runs.

Shami made a comeback to the sport after a year-long hiatus due to injury in Bengal's final Ranji Trophy match of the first leg against Madhya Pradesh in Indore. He made a strong impression by taking seven wickets over the course of both innings.
Before today's game, Shami took eight wickets in seven matches.
With Shami bowling his full quota of overs in every game, the expectation has been that he will join the Indian team in Australia at some point over the course of the five-match Test series.
However, Rohit Sharma cast doubt over his fitness post India's defeat in Adelaide while claiming the door was open for him.
